FROZEN UTAH LAKE PHOTOSHOOT || TAYLOR + LISET

FROZEN UTAH LAKE PHOTOSHOOT

The first time I experienced Utah Lake freezing over, it blew me away. It only happens during very specific conditions in the winter. (Side note: I got a message on Instagram once from someone asking when the best time of year would be to take photos at the frozen lake. The answer? It’s definitely winter.) The way the ice breaks and piles up is so cool. I had never seen anything like it before, and still to this day, I have never seen it anywhere else, either.

Taylor and Liset are the best. I photographed their elopement at the Salt Flats, and we have remained friends since then. I have photographed them at least once a year since we met, and we sometimes meet up and go on dates together. Liset is one of those people that you come in contact with and cannot help by smile the whole time and leave feeling SO HAPPY. Taylor is so funny, and he and Kellon (my husband) don’t stop talking when they are together. As soon as I saw the ice was here and Utah lake was frozen, I knew I wanted to do a photoshoot with Taylor and Liset.

The lake itself is only 10ft deep on average, so it’s actually super safe shooting on top of this ice. The reason the ice stacks up so much is because the lake freezes, but then the wind creates waves under the ice. It then pushes the ice to one end of the lake, and once it hits a sand bar, it piles up! So if I fell through the ice, which has happened before, you only fall anywhere from a few inches to a foot. Definitely smart to be safe and aware, but I would never ask my clients to go out and do something that is extremely dangerous and puts all of us at high risk.
